1971 Rapid Transit System Caravan Road Runner
Due to the major model change of the Road Runner for 1971, Plymouth commissioned a new customized version to be built for the Rapid Transit System Caravan. This car was extensively restyled. The only items not altered are the doors, roof, interior, and the horn which still goes "beep-beep." ![]() The rear of the car was also completely modified. It features a hand-formed roll pan that houses concealed red, green, and amber taillight lenses. Under the pan, the exhaust tips have been doubled with two pairs of exhaust tips. To accommodate the integral rear aerodynamic spoiler, as well as to enhance the lines of the car, the deck lid has been recessed over four inches. One of the most unique features on this vehicle are three-dimensional vacuum formed Road Runner heads that are over two inches high. These "chicken heads" light up when the headlights are activated and serve as the car's side marker lights. The paint is a vibrant candy-over-pearl orange with a white pearl break-line that runs the entire length of the car. The body work and paint were executed by Chuck Miller's Styline Custom in Detroit. The design illustration and paint schemes were rendered by Harry Bradley. Click here for the full story on the Rapid Transit System Caravan.
